Music & Choir

JK-2nd General Music

In JK – 2nd grade music, the primary objective is to expose students to a wide variety of musical styles and genres, instruments, sounds, as well as to connect music to other disciplines in order to foster an appreciation of and excitement for the world of music. 

Major Units Include:

  • World Music

  • Famous Composers

  • Movement in Music

  • Visual Arts & Music

  • Christmas Program

  • Ear Training

  • Solfège

  • Instruments of the Orchestra

  • Songwriting

  • Fundamentals of Music Reading

Classwork includes singing, dancing, listening exercises, music games and activities, playing on a variety of instruments, group discussion, music notation and reading, as well as performing in several special programs throughout the school year.

 

3rd Grade General Music

In 3rd grade music, the primary objective is to prepare students to be involved in a music performance group (band, strings, or choir) that are available to them as an elective the following year.  Students gain exposure to a wide variety of musical styles, genres, and instruments, and experience how to read music in order to practice and perform both individually and as a group on the recorder.

  • Christmas Program

  • Ear Training

  • Visual Arts & Music

  • Songwriting

  • Composers

  • Solfège

  • Music Reading & Notation

  • Recorders

Classwork includes singing, music analysis, practice and performance methods, fundamentals of the recorder, group discussion, listening exercises, music games, and writing original songs.  Students are expected to practice the recorder at home every week.

 

4th & 5th Grade Choir

In both the 4th and 5th grade choirs, the primary objective is to develop the student as an independent singer and musician, as well as an actively contributing member of the group.  Students gain exposure to a variety of musical styles and genres and are given several opportunities to perform throughout the school year.

Major Performances Include:

  • Christmas Program

  • Great American’s Day

  • Grandparents’ Day

  • Ice Cream Social

  • Various Chapels

  • …and more!

Classwork includes group discussion, sight singing, vocal warm ups, breathing exercises, vocal technique, music reading, ear training, solfège, diction, the lives of composers, and performance technique.  Students are expected to practice and memorize songs both in class and at home prior to a performance.
